Your Greatest Desire

Students at a medical schools desire to save lives. People learning to be astronauts desire to travel in space. Students in driver’s education desire to legally drive a vehicle on the roads.

Your greatest desire regarding your employment might be to earn more money. Your greatest desire for your personal life might be to buy a larger house.

But what is your greatest desire regarding your spiritual life?

People called to work in the ministry might answer something like:

  • That the size of the congregation would increase greatly in number
  • To mend as many lives as possible
  • To be on more radio and television stations

People not called to full-time ministry, might answer something like:

  • To reach the lost in the neighborhood
  • To minister to the poor with food and clothing
  • To be highly effective within a specific ministry at the church

What is your greatest desire regarding your spiritual life?

God appeared to Solomon one night in a dream and asked him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you." (1 Kings 3:5b) Whew! God told Solomon to ask for anything! Solomon asked for wisdom and God was well-pleased to give it to him.

Has God appeared to you and told you to ask Him for whatever you desire? If not, that’s okay—even before you were born, Jesus promised that you could ask for anything and that God would give it to you. “I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” (John 16:23)

You can ask God for anything, just like Solomon did, and He will give it to you.

So, what is your greatest desire regarding your spiritual life?

Notice that the examples of possible answers listed above all pertain to the doing of something in the kingdom of God.

God did not create man to tend the garden. He did not need a gardener.

God created man to have fellowship with Him.

He did not create us to give us work orders, send us on our way, and report back whenever we need help.

God’s purpose for our existence is to fellowship with Him. He does give us assignments and the talents and gifts to accomplish His plan for our lives, but our priority must be to fellowship with Him.

When He walked the Earth, Jesus explained His relationship with Father: “Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does.” (John 5:19–20a) This intimacy should be our goal.

We need to realize that we are not supposed to be gardeners.

Martha was distracted by tending to the garden—the doing of things—and missed the intimacy that Mary enjoyed while in the presence of Jesus.

Abraham walked before God, but Enoch walked with God (Genesis 48:15, 5:24). Enoch knew the purpose of his existence. God showed Enoch many revelations (The Book of Enoch), including the Second Coming of Christ (Jude 1:14–15)—and this was before the flood! At the beginning of the age of man, God showed Enoch the end of the age of man.

Noah walked with God (Genesis 6:9) and was chosen to save the human race from complete destruction.

Moses walked with God and met with Him regularly in the tent of meeting. They spoke together as friends. (Exodus 33:11)

Paul walked with God and was given visions and abundant revelations of God. (2 Corinthians 12:7)

John walked with God and was transported to Heaven and witnessed the unveiling of Jesus Christ. (Revelation)

Are you a gardener or are you a friend of God?

Do you work for God or do you walk with God?

It is my prayer for you that Father will continue to help you to hear His voice, and more and more frequently.

With God’s grace and in His peace,

Gary
