The Importance of Humility Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary defines “humility” as: Freedom from pride and arrogance; lowliness of mind; a modest estimate of one's own worth; a sense of one's own unworthiness through imperfection and sinfulness. A verse in the Bible that best defines “humility” is in the first part of 1 Samuel 15:17: “…small in your own eyes...” Humility does not mean that we are worthless or have no talents or abilities. Humility means that we do not trust in our own abilities and that we have a profound confidence in God. Humility and hearing God’s voice go hand in hand. The more humble we are, the more we will hear His voice. Next to Jesus, Moses was the greatest person of revelation in the Bible. And he “was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.” (Numbers 12:3) In fact, Moses was so humble that God spoke to him face to face (12:8). And not only face to face, but He spoke to Moses plainly and clearly. What a wonderful way to consistently hear from our Heavenly Father! A truly humble person knows that he can do nothing apart from Christ (John 15:6). A humble person puts his confidence in the Holy Spirit’s ability to speak, not in their ability to hear. A truly humble person is willing to associate with and serve people of lower position than himself (Romans 12:10). An accurate gauge to assess our level of humility can be seen in our reaction to honest and accurate rebukes and correction. How do we feel and react when someone points out a sin or a flaw in our character? Do we get defensive, try to minimize the message, and attack the person? Or do we humbly accept the message, see it as an opportunity to help us grow, and actually love the person who rebuked us? (Proverbs 9:8) Our level of humility to God cannot be greater than our humility to man. Pride is the opposite of humility. Psalm 138:6 reveals that God is intimate with the humble, but He stays away from the prideful. In fact, the strongest rebukes from Jesus were to the prideful. The more humble we are, the more often we will hear God’s voice. It is my prayer for you that Father will continue to help you to hear His voice, and more and more frequently.
