Hearing God Through His Gifts

“Do you know the gifts of the Spirit that have been given to you, personally?”

That question has been asked by numerous ministers at churches and conferences and each with similar responses—only about 5 percent of the attendees raised their hand!

The Bible instructs us on how to approach spiritual gifts.  Specifically, we are to:

Learn about our gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1)

Use our gifts (Romans 12:6-8)

Not lack in any gift (1 Corinthians 1:5-7)

Pursue love and "eagerly" desire spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 14:1)

Each and every Christian can have at least one spiritual gift and we are told to “to burn with zeal” for spiritual gifts. And no matter how much you burn with zeal, know that Father’s desire to give you gifts is always greater than your desire to receive them.

In each gift is a “guarantee” that you will hear God in and through that gift—otherwise, that gift would not operate!

Below is a list of gifts from 1 Corinthians 12. As you read the list, you might feel an attraction for one or more of them. When that happens, most often this is the Holy Spirit pointing out to you that He desires that you operate in that particular gift.

Word of wisdom: Supernatural knowledge that addresses things of the future.

Word of knowledge: Knowledge of certain facts past or present that are not available to our senses that only God could reveal.

Discerning of spirits: Supernatural insight into the true source and nature, divine or demonic, of any supernatural manifestation.

Gifts of healings: Supernatural healing of diseases and infirmities.

The working of miracles: A reversal or suspension of natural laws—an intervention in the ordinary course of nature.

Faith: An extraordinary trust in God under the most difficult or dangerous circumstance.

Different kinds of tongues:  Supernatural utterance given by the Holy Spirit in languages never learned by the speaker, nor understood by the speaker and most often not understood by the hearer.

Interpretation of tongues:  Supernatural understanding of the meaning of an utterance given in other tongues.

Prophecy: A divinely inspired, anointed, and supernatural utterance that often operates in conjunction with words of wisdom and or words of knowledge.

Additional spiritual gifts are (Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12):

Ministry/Serving

Teaching

Exhortation/Encouraging

Giving

Leadership

Mercy

Helps

Administrations/Government
