God Speaks Even When We Don't Hear Him

Sometimes we might feel that God doesn’t talk to us very often because we hear His voice only once a week or once a year, or even once in our whole life.

We might feel that when we hear Him speak it’s because He decided to talk to us at that time.

But, we need to understand it’s not that when we hear His voice it’s because He’s decided to talk to us. What is actually happening is that when we hear His voice it’s because we hear His voice.

In other words, when we hear Him speak, it’s because we can hear Him speak. He speaks to us far, far more than we realize and more than we hear Him!

God is not following us around and waiting until the moment that we have ears to hear, and then says, “Oh, good! John is able to hear me now, so I can now finally something to him.”

If that’s the attitude that God has about speaking to us, then to those that have never heard His voice we could say that God just doesn’t talk to them. But, that’s not reality.

The problem is not that God isn’t speaking to us, the problem is that we don’t always hear Him when He speaks.

And this is very good news! God speaks to us frequently and regularly—we just need to always be in a receptive mode of listening.

There was a crowd around Jesus when He said to the Father, “Father, glorify your name!” Father spoke audibly—into the physical realm so that even physical ears would be able to hear Him. “The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.” (v.29b)

There were three different kinds of hearers in the crowd:

  • Those that heard a thunder-like sound
  • Those that attributed the voice to an angel
  • Those that knew it was God’s audible voice

So, God does speak to us even if He knows that we will hear only noise. God does speak to us even when He knows that we will attribute His words to another source.

And, of course, God does speak to us when He knows that we will hear and understand Him.

Notice the key in the above verse: “The crowd that was there”. These were people that gathered to hear from Jesus. They desired to hear.

Our desire to hear God’s voice is the key. Our desire to be in His presence, to be with Him is the key.

Regardless of our current hearing ability, if we desire to hear His voice, He will speak to us—and far more often than we might realize!

It is my prayer for you that Father will continue to help you to hear His voice, and more and more frequently.

With God’s grace and in His peace,

Gary
