God Has Many Things to Tell Us
After living with and ministering to His disciples 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for three years, Jesus told them that He had even more to tell them. Jesus also said that He could not give them these additional teachings and revelations because they were not ready. The disciples could not bear these revelations in their current spiritual state (John 16:1213a). Jesus told them that when the Holy Spirit comes (in Acts 2), then they would be able to be guided into all truth.
While being guided into all truth is a process that requires a teachable and meek spirit, we must have the ability to accept and to ‘stomach’ those things that the Holy Spirit reveals to us. Yes, there are things that He will show us that are beyond our current understanding and there are things that we might find are very disturbing.
Peter had difficulty understanding revelations of God that were beyond his current understanding. In 2 Peter 3:16, he said that some of Paul’s teachings were hard for him to understand.
In Revelation 10:910, an angel gave John a little book and told him to eat it. After John ate the little book, his stomach felt bitter. John “ate” revelation of things that were so awful and terrible that he felt sick. Likewise, Daniel lay ill for several days after seeing a particular vision and receiving the interpretation of that vision (Daniel 8:27).
God knows everything and nothing is hidden from His eyes. He could speak to us about things that would make us very uncomfortable. Consider the following possibilities:
- You are walking through a mall and suddenly you know the past, the present, and the future of everyone you see. The sight of all the sin and the ugly secrets of all those people could disturb you greatly. And seeing the future of those that reject Christ as they are thrown into the lake of fire might cause you to lay ill for days.
- God reveals to you the details of the next major terrorist attack on the United States. What would you do with the knowledge of the exact date and time, the location, the weapon that will be used, the number of casualties, as well as the names of the terrorists? If you gave that information to the Homeland Security Department and the terrorist’s plan was revealed, you could be arrested as a co-conspirator. Would you be able to handle false accusations on such a large scale? On the other hand, you could be given immediate nationwide status as a hero, a psychic, or a prophet. Could you refuse man’s praise and give all the glory to God?
- As you are driving past a hospital, God tells you to stop and enter the hospital and that He will show you 121 people that He wants you to lay hands on and that He will heal them. Would you stop and go into the hospital? And if you did stop and God healed those 121 people, could you handle the sudden fame and popularity and praise that man would pour onto you?
- Or how about something more personal: God shows you that one of your parents has led a double life since your birth and that the foundation of your relationship with that parent was built on deceit and liesnot the love that you have believed and trusted in all of your life. How many days might you lay ill after receiving that revelation?
God desires to talk to us and to reveal hidden things. He seeks faithful servants with whom He can share His heart withas a friend would. While His words carry His will, those words also require us to be willing to bear those words. We must be willing to accept revelations that are outside our current understanding, even if they are extremely uncomfortable.
It is my prayer for you that Father will continue to help you to hear His voice, and more and more frequently.
With God’s grace and in His peace,
Gary
