Gifts of the Spirit pt.6-Gifts of Healing

The gifts of healing is the third of the “do something” gifts of the Spirit.

The gifts of healing are manifested for the supernatural healing of sickness and disease without any natural source of means.

1 Corinthians 12:9b, “…to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,” It is the only gift of the nine gifts that is in the plural form. Why this particular gift is in the plural, the Bible does not say. But an understanding of healing in Jesus’ ministry and the ministry of those that have been given this gift might provide some valuable insight.

Jesus was given the Spirit without measure, without any limit (John 3:34). Jesus healed all kinds of diseases and illnesses (Matthew 4:23). Jesus healed everything from blindness, leprosy, to deafness. The measure of the Spirit that Jesus ministered with was without any limits—He could heal anything that prevented a person from being physically whole.

Jesus ministry encompassed all things that His body, collectively, can be doing. No one individual is anointed and gifted to walk in the measure of the Spirit that Jesus did. 1 Corinthians 12:7–12 says that we are His body and that each part of His body has a specific gift. Collectively, we minister as Christ did.

If we look at the ministries of those with the gifts of healing in recent history, we can see a distinctiveness that might explain why “gifts” is plural.

For example, the following men were gifted with the gifts of healing and their ministry seemed focus on one or several ailments:

  • Stephen Jeffreys—Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Fred Squire—Blindness
  • Smith Wigglesworth—Epilepsy
  • Kenneth Hagin—Ruptures, growths, hernias, and lumps of any kind

When these men prayed, healing of those specific problems occurred nearly every time. Yet, their “success” with other ailments were not as frequent.

Please don’t misunderstand the point here. Part of the Great Commission states that we can lay hands on the sick and that they will recover (Mark 16:18). Each one of us can be used to heal any kind of physical ailment. But, the gifts of healing is a ministry that certain individuals have that they regularly operate in.

The gifts of healing can be manifest in numerous ways. For instance, the Gospels tell us that Jesus did not always use the same procedure when he healed people that were blind. To one blind person, He simply touched their eyes (Matthew 9:29). To another blind person, He spit on the man’s eyes as well as laid His hands on his eyes (Mark 8:23–25). To another, He just spoke the words, “Go, your faith has healed you.” (Mark 10:52) And to another, He made mud from His spit, rubbed the mud on the blind man’s eyes and then told him to go wash in the pool Siloam.

The gifts of healing is a supernatural manifestation of healing as the Holy Spirit wills.

It is my prayer for you that Father will continue to help you to hear His voice, and more and more frequently.

With God’s grace and in His peace,

Gary
