Deaf Zones There are two goals of the ears-2-hear website: to explain those things that help you to hear God’s voice and to explain those things that hinder you from hearing God’s voice. Particular hindrances common to all of us are our sins and/or character flaws. These things create blind spots or “deaf zones” in hearing God’s voice. The good news is that we can do something about those deaf zones. 1 Corinthians
And 2 Corinthians 13:5a says, “examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.” Examining and judging ourselves helps us to recognize and identify these hindrances so that we can deal with these things and improve our hearing ability. One of the definitions of the Greek word for “examine” is, “to try, make trial of, test: for the purpose of ascertaining his quantity, or what he thinks, or how he will behave himself”. One of the definitions of the Greek word for “judge” is, “to separate, make a distinction, discriminate, to prefer”. When we obey the scriptures and examine and judge ourselves, we will undoubtedly discover things that hinder our hearing. How do we examine and judge ourselves? First, we need to be willing to be examined and judged. David was a man after God’s own heart and he asked God to examine his heart. David asked, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me,” (Psalm 139:2324a). David went to God for help in examining himself. He knew that only God could be completely truthful and objective. He knew that even his own heart had the ability to taint a self-exam. Second, after we are aware of any flaws or sins, we must be willing to be corrected and to yield those areas over to God’s will. David was willing to turn from anything that offended God. David concluded these two verses with, “…and lead me in the way everlasting.” (v. 24b) avid was willing to forsake anything in his character that offended God and be led entirely by God. If you are interested in increasing your ability to hear God’s voice and are willing to go through the examination and judging process, ask God, as David did, to help search you, try you, judge you and lead you away from those things that offend Him. Then, listen. Listen for Him to speak to you about anything. And expect to hear Him through the most unlikely sources (ask Balaam about his donkey!). For example, someone might make a quick comment about something negative in your character, and God makes those words ring in your spirit all day longuntil you recognize that He wants you to pay attention to those words. Or, within a day or two, several different people make the same negative comment to you about your personality. If you have asked God to reveal to you any flaws or sins that are causing deaf zones, He will answer your prayer. In fact, He will answer that prayer as soon as it leaves your lips. Father’s heart yearns for us to recognize and rid ourselves of anything that hinders us from hearing His voice. We must be willing to go through the exam and judgment processa process that won’t end until we are taken home! It is my prayer for you that Father will continue to help you to hear His voice, and more and more frequently.
