Counterfeit Voices: Familiar Spirits
Everyone who seeks to hear God’s voice must become skilled at discerning the source of all thoughts and voices.
Thoughts and voices originate from one of three sources: the Divine, our own minds, and the demonic.
Everyone has heard and is still able to hear demonic voices. (Those voices usually come in the form of unclean thoughts and thoughts that tempt us to do something against God’s will.)
It has been my experience that most people who regularly hear God’s voice often operate in at least two gifts of the Spirit: prophesy (to reveal the will or message of God) and the word of knowledge (knowledge of certain facts past or present that are not available to our senses that only God could reveal). This issue of the e-newsletter explains how demonic spirits counterfeit these gifts.
Here are two examples:
A man named Edgar Cayce (1877–1945) would give “readings” for specific people. Although many of these people were hundreds or thousands of miles away, he was able to provide correct information about their past or present or personal information such as what they were wearing on a particular day. Cayce also gave readings on future events.
Today, a man named John Edward also provides “readings” primarily on his television show, Crossing Over. Edwards’s readings are mainly focused on communicating with the dead. He also is able to provide correct information about a person’s past.
Neither of these two men profess that Jesus is Lord.
Satan is the great counterfeiter. Satan is happy to provide correct and accurate information, but he takes that information and wraps it around a lie. Many swallow this and are poisoned into believing any doctrine other than Biblical doctrine.

Both of these men communicate with demonic spirits, more specifically, familiar spirits. This evil spirit’s job is to know specific people and to provide information about them.
Most non-Christians (and sad to say, even some Christians) are very impressed when a “psychic” reveals detailed information about someone that otherwise would be impossible for the psychic to know. For example, Edward tells someone in the audience, “Your father’s name is Elian and the day that you heard that he had died, you were wearing a red shirt.” Or, Cayce describes the illness of a specific person that is 1,000 miles away, when the illness began, and what the person has done so far to find relief.
Evil spirits communicate with each other and with people that have allowed themselves to be used by these spirits. Familiar spirits know people, alive and dead, and are more than willing to share their knowledge with the deceived “host” so that many, many more people can also become deceived.
Cayce and Edwards are examples of men that were born with an extraordinary ability to hear God’s voice, but chose rather to use that ability to hear deceiving and familiar spirits. Although too late for Cayce, Edward could choose to serve the real and living God and be used in a very powerful way to advance His kingdom, not Satan’s kingdom. In fact, our prayers can move heaven and earth to bring Edward to the place of decision.
Warning: Anyone that has been involved with the occult must address this activity with the Father. Unconfessed sins and any involvement with psychic/occult matters must be repented of and, using the name of Jesus, all ties must be broken. Forgiven sin reclaims the territory that the evil spirits took and breaking the ties to those activities closes the door of access that those spirits used.
It is my prayer for you that Father will continue to help you to hear His voice, and more and more frequently.
