What to Expect

As you grow in your ability to hear Father’s voice, you will change. You can expect at least the following:

Expect to hear a lot about your own spiritual condition. Father will give you insight on how you can grow up in Him faster than before you were hearing His voice. In fact, many people who regularly hear God’s voice estimate that 90% of what He says is directed only at that individual. This estimate is easy to accept when we understand Father’s passion for us to become more Christlike and to be healed of anything that might taint the message that He gives us for someone else (Luke 6:43–45).

Expect to hear His voice from many different methods. Remember that God spoke to Balaam through his donkey—how much more can He speak to us through men of any stature and environment. Here is an example:

While watching a movie or television show, a spoken sentence or phrase might seem to scream so loudly inside of you that your entire focus fixates on those words. Then those words linger and linger with you, until you recognize God is speaking to you and you resign to act upon the message.

Expect to make mistakes. Not that you are hoping for mistakes, but realize that there was only One who lived a mistake-free life—Jesus Christ. Just as a baby falls when learning to walk, and just as a teenager makes unwise decisions, we all will have an occasion where we missed (or will miss) God’s voice.

Expect your Father to speak to you daily. Yes, every day. We are to—and can—walk as Jesus walked. Jesus said, “…My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." …"I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” (John 5:17, 19) Father works every day. Father speaks every day. We can hear His voice every day, yes, even in the smallest of matters. He cares about and wants to guide you in the details of your life.

Expect to really hear your own words. Yes, you’ll become much more aware of the words that proceed out of your own mouth. You’ll be more aware of the power in those words that you speak—the words that are seasoned with salt or not—and you’ll want to always bless others.

Expect to speak less. You will always be in a listening-mode and you realize that it’s very difficult to listen while you are talking!

Expect to get answers and insight into questions and situations. For example, everything in your life seems to be falling apart—friends seem distant, finances are getting tight, things are breaking and needing costly repairs,…—it seems like everything you touch is cursed. When you know God’s voice and you ask Him what’s going on, you’ll hear His answer. He might remind you of a prayer you prayed many years ago when you said something like, “Father, I give you my life. Use me as you wish. And if there be any obstacles in the way of my serving you completely, I give you permission to remove them.” Then suddenly you realize that everything that’s been “going wrong” in your life is actually orchestrated by Father to bring your heart to a place where He can better mature you and use you.

Expect to see people’s hearts. When you learn to hear God’s voice and understand His heart, He will grant you the ability to hear and see peoples’ actual spiritual states. You will see through facades, beyond their words, and into their hearts so that you are better able to meet their need with God’s love.
